I'm mildly insane. I have slayed no dragons today. In my head, I'm a vigilante hood and master of archery. In reality, I'm just a student in love with the world. I don't look the way pretty girls look, but I won't apologize for it. I believe that life is fair; people aren't. You can call me Spunky.

Natural/Transitioning Hair Help Needed

I need a protein based DC & a moisture based one, but I’m not trying to splurge on trying everything out and with school coming up in a couple weeks and my not having begun the packing process, I don’t really have time to do a thorough search.

What does everyone else use? If I get enough responses (though I’m not counting on it), I’ll research what the suggestions thoroughly myself.

…Matter of fact, I’m going to send the question out to different tumblrs, too.

But you guys can still answer. And some of my followers are a couple months into their transition and would probably appreciate the information, too.

Generally relaxed and natural hair benefit from different products.  For transitioning hair I would say that if you’re in the beginning stages of your transition w/ a small to medium amount of new growth continue to use the products that worked for your relaxed hair but start dabbling in hot oil treatments as well using natural oils.  When I was just starting out this really helped to keep my hair in good shape.  My go to oil is coconut oil because it has a good amount of protein and moisture in it and it does penetrate the hair shaft.  You can find coconut oil at any health food store.  If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one hair product….coconut oil.  A really good DC that doesn’t break the bank is the Creme of Nature PROFESSIONAL Nourishing and Strengthening Treatment Repair for Damaged Weak or Stressed hair w/ Jojoba Oil and Olive Oil (yes, that is the whole name).  I have used it both at the beginning of my transition and recently (my “new growth” is past my ears).  A good protein treatment that doesn’t break the bank is the Aphogee protein treatment.  I used this when I was relaxed and just starting to transition.  Nexxus Emergencee is also an amazing protein treatment for new transitioners.  Again I have to state that Coconut Oil is also a great option for protein and it is cheaper than all of these options.  Many people will recommend the Organic Hair Mayonnaise products for protein but the key ingredient in those products is egg powder so really….just go to your fridge, whip up some eggs and mayonnaise and you’ve got yourself a protein treatment (smelly but effective).

NOW….once you are far past newbie stage, like myself, you will most likely require products that contain mostly natural and nourishing ingredients.  In this case, I know you’re not trying to break the bank, but Carols Daughter makes an AMAZING line of deep conditioners for transitioning and natural hair.  Their Black Vanilla Moisturizing Hair Smoothie is, hands down, the best deep conditioner for MOISTURE I’ve ever used.  A good product for protein (also not cheap) is the Miss Jessie’s Rapid Recovery Treatment.  I’ve heard great things about their Sweetback Treatment as well….apparently it is even better than the Rapid Recovery Treatment but I’ve never tried it so I can’t say.  I only recommend products I’ve tried.

Thank you so much!I’m actually thirteen months post-relaxer, but breakage recently became a big problem for me (though mostly just w/my relaxed hair), so it was recommended that I analyze the elasticity of my hair & evaluate whether it was due to lack of protein or moisture. At times, it would seem to be a protein problem, moisture at others.

So, someone pointed out that the two should have a healthy balance. I looked around on how to do that & how to judge when it was balanced. I don’t recall where I heard this, but someone said that they alternated between the types of DCs every week & their hair balanced out, and that she still alternates between the two weekly to keep it that way.

I don’t want a protein treatment so much, and maybe a protein-based DC isn’t what I really meant, but one with quite a bit of protein in it, along with moisturizing and nourishing qualities. Perhaps it’s the same thing, I don’t know. I’m in a small KY town where kinky hair is avoided like the plague, so the internet is really all I have to get my information, which is often conflicting because everyone’s hair is different.

Oh —- & I looooooooooove my coconut oil, too! It is everything. n_n
